Mary Catherine Dowd, 84, of West Roxbury, passed away on September 23, 2008 at the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston after a brief illness.
Born in Boston, she was the loving daughter of the late Edward and Sarah (Caulfield) Dowd and sister to the late Edward “Sonny” Dowd.
She was a Boston Public Schools Teacher for 40 years. Mary taught first grade at the Old & New Quincy School in Boston, first grade at the Charles Sumner School in Roslindale and retired in 1986 as a Title One Teacher at the Murphy School in Dorchester.
Mary attended Mission Church Grammar School & High School in Mission Hill. She went on to receive her Bachelor’s Degree in Education from the Boston State Teachers College in Boston.
A devout Catholic, Mary was a parishioner in her home parish of St. Theresa’s, West Roxbury, and often attended mass at Mission Church, St. Susanna’s Church and St. Bartholomew’s Church.
Mary is survived by several Caulfield and Kelley cousins and numerous close friends.
Her funeral will be held from the P.E. Murray-George F. Doherty & Sons Funeral Home, 2000 Centre St., West Roxbury, on Thursday, Sept. 25th at 10 AM with a funeral mass in the Mission Church, Mission Hill, at 11 AM. Visitation will be prior to mass from 9-10 AM at the funeral home. Interment will follow in Mt. Benedict Cemetery, West Roxbury.
