Obituary


McCarthy --- J. Leo of Brookline and Sagamore Beach, formerly of Jamaica Plain, September 22, 2008. Beloved husband of the late Barbara (Walsh) McCarthy. Loving father of Mary M. DiMatteo of FL; John L. McCarthy Jr. and Susan of OH; Christopher E. McCarthy of NH; Barbara W. McCarthy and Anne Herbst of Roslindale; Julie A. McCarthy of Quincy; and David C. McCarthy and Bonnie Lessor of Lynnfield. Brother of Paul McCarthy of Quincy and of the late Justin and Edward McCarthy. Also survived by five grandchildren, four great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

U.S. Army Veteran WWII. Engaged leader in both civic and professional life. President of the Jamaica Hills Association, served on the Boston Parks and Recreation Commission, and on the Citizen Advisory Group for the Arnold Arboretum. Began work at New England Mutual Life Insurance Company (now New England Financial) in 1949. Respected throughout his career as a man who was successful while being a model of generous collegiality. Honored and admired by the multiple generations of insurance professionals he trained and mentored.

Funeral from the Robert J. Lawler and Crosby Funeral Home 1803 Centre St., West Roxbury on Saturday September 27th at 8:45am. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated in St. Mary of the Assumption Church, Brookline at 10:00am. Relatives and friends are invited to attend. Visiting hours Friday from 4:00 – 7:00pm. Interment St. Joseph Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Sherrill House (www.sherrillhouse.org/donate.php).
