Claire F. (Fontaine) Cayer, 85, of Mattapoisett died September 14, 2008 at Sippican Healthcare Center after a brief illness.
She was the wife of Norman R. Cayer.
Born in New Bedford, the daughter of the late Arthur C. and Yvonne (Keroack) Fontaine, she had lived in New Bedford for most of her life before moving to Mattapoisett in 2004. She was a graduate of Holy Family High School, class of 1940, and Brown University, class of 1944.
Mrs. Cayer was a communicant of St. Anthony's Church in Mattapoisett and a former communicant of St. Anne's Church in New Bedford where she was the recipient of the Marian Medal from the Diocese of Fall River for her years of service to her parish.
She was on the board of the New Bedford office of the Massachusetts Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children.
Survivors include her husband; 2 sons, Robert N. Cayer and his wife Joan of Fitchburg and Paul A. Cayer and his wife Eileen of Mattapoisett; 2 daughters, Louise F. Cruz and her husband Ronald of Fairfax, VA and Julie M. Cayer of Fairhaven; a brother, Richard C. Fontaine of New Bedford; 8 grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.
She was the mother of the late Charles A. Cayer, grandmother of the late Geofrey Cayer, and sister of the late Roger Fontaine and Arthur Fontaine.
Her Memorial Mass will be celebrated on Saturday, September 20th at 10 AM in St. Anthony's Church, Mattapoisett. In lieu of flowers, remembrances may be made to the Charles A. Cayer Scholarship Fund, Bishop Stang High School, 500 Slocum Road, North Dartmouth, MA 02747.
