Alfred Rogers Wilcox Sr., 36 Wilcox Road in the Quiambaug section of Stonington CT died September 11, 2008 at his home. He was born September 11, 1916 in New London CT, the son of Harold Anthony and Ruth Rogers Wilcox.
He graduated from Plainfield High School, Class of 1933 and attended Northeastern University until September 1938 when he came home to help with the aftermath of the “Great Hurricane” of that year and never returned to finish his degree.
He worked at the Case & Risley Press Paper Co. in Oneco, CT from 1940 until 1946 when he returned to Quiambaug to work for his grandfather George W. Wilcox, founder of George W. Wilcox Co., which he purchased in 1947 and is still operated by his son George (Jeff). He lobstered commercially during the summers of his high school and college years, staying with his grandfather during those summers. He married Priscilla Alden Saunders on July 12, 1941 at the Union Baptist Church, Mystic CT. Mrs. Wilcox predeceased him on Dec. 19, 1992. He was instrumental in organizing the Oneco Fire Company, and served as its Chief from 1940 to 1946 and was also instrumental in organizing the Quiambaug Fire District and served as its President and Chairman of the Board from 1960 to 1978. He was also an active firefighter/driver with the Quiambaug Fire Co. for many years and was a Life Charter Member of the fire company.
He was on the Stonington Board of Education from 1960 to 1978. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Mystic, serving as Chairman of its Board of Finance for many years, as well as serving as a trustee. He was a member of the Stonington Lodge of Odd Fellows #26.
Mr. Wilcox is survived by four sons, Peter Barry and his wife Jane, Richard Alden, George Jeffrey and his wife Nancy, and Alfred Rogers Jr. and his wife Carol. He also leaves a sister Eleanor Pietrusza of Westerly RI, 7 grandchildren Krista, Ashley, Stacey, Melissa, Brian, Damian, and Alfred R. III, 14 great grandchildren, his brother-in-law Horace B. Lamb, and several nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, October 4, 2008 at 11:00am at the First United Methodist Church, Willow Street, Mystic. Burial will be private. Donations in his memory may be made to the First United Methodist Church or to a charity of the donor’s choice.
