Obituary

John J. Fernandes, 82, of Orlando, Florida, formerly of New Bedford died Monday March 31, 2003 at home. He was the husband of Helena (Paulo) Fernandes, and son of the late Jose and Maria (Azevedo) Fernandes.

Mr. Fernandes was born in Brava, Cape Verde, and had lived in New Bedford for many years before moving to Orlando 10 years ago.

He was a former communicant of St. John the Baptist Church in New Bedford.

Mr. Fernandes was formerly employed as a steward with Exxon Corporation until his retirement.

Mr. Fernandes served in the American Merchant Marine Service during World War II. He was a 4th degree member of the Knights of Columbus Monsignor Bishop Assembly in Orlando.

Survivors include his wife; 3 sons, John J. Fernandes, Jr., of St. Louis, Missouri, John R. Fernandes of Fall River, Mass., and John Lomba of Pawtucket, Rhode Island; 2 daughters, Nina Goldstein of Pennsylvania, and Laurinda Helena Fernandes of New Bedford; and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.He was the brother of the late Turibio Fernandes and Alicia Rose.

Visiting hours Thursday 2-4 and 7-9 and Friday 2-4 and 7-9. Entombment will be in St. John's Cemetery.
