Dr. Richard H. Reis, 77, of Marion died September 5, 2008 after a long battle with emphysema.
He was the husband of the late Kathleen "Kay" Reis.
Born in Arlington, he was the son of the late Waldo F. Reis and Ursula E. Tetreau, he has resided in Marion since 1964.
Dr. Reis was formerly employed as a Professor of English at the University of Massachusetts, Dartmouth.
He was a graduate of Phillips Academy, St. Lawrence University, and received his Ph.D. from Brown University.
Dr. Reis was a renowned expert on George MacDonald’s fiction and wrote George MacDonald’s Fiction: A Twentieth-Century Perspective. He was also an author of poetry, book reviews, a chess game, and an article on combinatorial mathematics. Dr. Reis was Chair of the English Department and a much loved professor at the University of Massachusetts, Dartmouth. He also served on numerous committees for the Massachusetts Democratic Party.
Survivors include a daughter, Elizabeth Middleton of Marion; a son, Dr. Matthew Reis of Millis; sisters Joan O’Toole, and Carolynn Kalellis, brothers Jack Reis, William Reis, Robert Reis; his stepmother, Florence Reis of Westfield, NJ; 3 grandchildren, Tara, Morgan and Sophia; numerous nieces and nephews.
He was the brother of the late Charles Reis.
His Memorial Service will be held on Wednesday, September 10th at 10 AM in the First Congregational Church of Marion, 28 Main St., Marion. In lieu of flowers, remembrances may be made to the Brown University Scholarship Fund in memory of Dr. Richard H. Reis, P.O. Box 1893 Providence, RI 02912.
