George A. Smith, age 78, of Iron Street, Ledyard, passed away Monday at his home.
Mr. Smith was born in New London on October 27, 1929 one of 13 children to Charles and Ethel (Osborne) Smith. After receiving his education, he served honorably in the US Army.
He was employed as a delivery driver for Spicer Fuel Co. for over 30 years prior to his retirement in 1992.
Mr. Smith will be remembered as a dedicated volunteer at area soup kitchens. He also volunteered much of his time at the Ledyard Fair and the Mystic Fire Police Assoc. He was a member of the Ledyard Senior Center and enjoyed square dancing and camping.
He was married to Maryann J. (Brand) Smith in Waterford on June 16, 1969.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by his children, Leonard J. Prue of Westerly, Susan M. Steele of Groton, Patricia A. Nott of Ledyard, and Debbie Chase of MA; his siblings, Robert Smith of Mystic, Charlotte Whipple of Pawcatuck, Bessie Stafford of Mystic, Nathan Smith of New London; 14 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.
He was predeceased by 2 grandchildren, 3 great-grandchildren, 4 brothers, and 4 sisters.
His family will greet relatives and friends at The Dinoto Funeral Home, 17 Pearl Street, Historic downtown Mystic on Thursday from 6-8pm. A Funeral Service will be conducted on Friday at 11am at the funeral home. The Rev. Carol R. Johnson, Pastor of the Old Mystic United Methodist Church, will officiate. Burial with military honors will be at Elm Grove Cemetery.
