Salvador Fernandes, 77, of New Bedford died March 28, 2003 at St. Luke's Hospital after a brief illness.
Mr. Fernandes was the husband of Katherine (Viger) Fernandes, with whom he shared 52 years of marriage, and son of the late Antonio and Maria Agusta (Viera) Fernandes.
He was born in New Bedford and lived in New Bedford all of his life.
Mr. Fernandes was a communicant of Holy Name of the Sacred Heart of Jesus Church.
He was formerly employed as a truck driver in the seafood industry for many years with his own business, Sal and Son Trucking and later was a truck driver for his son Michael, at Northern Wind Seafood in New Bedford.
Mr. Fernandes was a former member of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks Lodge 73 and a former member of Ronnie's Cafe Driving Club.
He enjoyed spending time with his children, grandchildren and great-granddaughter. He enjoyed life and also enjoyed dancing, hunting and fishing.
Survivors include his wife; 2 sons, Michael T. Fernandes, and his wife Jeralyn, of Westport and Sal J. Fernandes, and his wife Theresa, of Fairhaven; 2 daughters, Kathleen A. Genden, and her husband Lawrence M., of Daytona Beach, Fla., and Dorene A. Fernandes of New Bedford; 2 sisters, Florence Texeira and Sally Mandeville, both of New Bedford; 11 grandchildren, Sherri Fernandes, Lloyd Bennett, Jr., Keisha Fernandes, Diona Floyd, Brandon Medeiros, Theresa Fernandes, Erika Fernandes, Rebecca Fernandes, Jillian Fernandes, Colleen Fernandes and Nicholas Fernandes; a great-granddaughter, Chloe Marie Bennett; several nieces and nephews.
He was the father of the late Kim Marie Bennett and brother of the late Anthony Fernandes, Leonard Fernandes and Alice Ponte.
