Obituary

Edward P. Riley, 93, passed away on August 14th, 2008 at the E.N. Rogers Memorial Veterans Hospital in Bedford. He was born in Malden on December 19th, 1914 to his parents Philip L. and Mary (Flanagan) Riley. Edward was raised and educated in Medford, graduating from Medford High School in 1933. While at Medford High School, Edward excelled at the sports of Hockey and Baseball. He was inducted into the Medford High School Sports Hall of Fame in 2000. After graduation, he attended Boston College and played Hockey and Baseball there as well. He also played for the Cape Cod Baseball League during the summer months. During World War II, Edward served his country as a Captain in the Army. He was involved in the campaigns in North Africa, Italy and Germany. For over 32 years, he worked for the MBTA. He held many positions and retired as the Director of Operations for the Commuter Rail. He and his wife Sarah enjoyed traveling with friends from the MBTA Pensioners Club. In recent years, they enjoyed spending the winter months in Pompano Beach in Florida. Edward has spent the last 62 years living at his home in Malden. During these last months, he was a patient at the E.N. Rogers Memorial Veterans Hospital GRECC Unit in Bedford. His family extends their deepest appreciation for the loving care he received from the staff and the volunteers at the Hospital. He is survived by his children; Regina Sarkozy and her husband Larry of Windham, NH, Jane Wade Riley of Swampscott and Edward P. Riley Jr. and his wife Maureen of Melrose; his grandchildren Jennifer, Larry, Meredith, Christopher, Douglas, Katelyn and Patrick; his great grandchildren Alex, Megan, Trevor and Eloise; and by his siblings Anne Regan of South Yarmouth and Leonard Riley of Medford. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews. Edward was predeceased by his wife Sarah M. (Quigg) Riley and by his brothers Francis, John, William and Philip Riley. Relatives and friends are invited to attend his funeral from the A.J. Breslin & Son Funeral Home, 610 Pleasant St., Malden at Medford line on Wednesday August 20th at 8 AM followed by a Mass of Christian Burial celebrated at Immaculate Conception Church, 600 Pleasant St., Malden at 9 AM. Services will conclude with interment in Forest Dale Cemetery in Malden. Visiting hours will be held at the funeral home on Tuesday August 19th from 4-8 PM.
