Obituary

Francis X. "Fran" Lucey, a 50 year resident of Melrose and formerly of Malden, died unexpectedly at his home in Melrose on Friday August 8, 2008. He was 85 years old.

Fran was born in Malden on February 2, 1923. He grew up in Malden where he attended Malden Parochial Schools and graduated from Malden Catholic High School. He enlisted into the United States Navy on August 25, 1942. He served his country during World War 2 and was discharged on October 30, 1945 with the rank of Gunners Mate Second Class. Following his discharge, Fran entered Yale University where he furthered his education. Fran began working for The United States Postal Service in 1949 as a letter carrier and later on as a clerk at South Postal Annex in South Boston. During his years with the Postal Service, Fran recieved several promotions and became Superintendant of The General Post Office in Post Office Square in Boston. He retired in 1979 as a Postal Executive after 30 years of service. He had been a member of the Wakefield Elks.

Fran is the beloved husband of 24 years to Margaret A. "Peg" (Forbes) Lucey and the late Marion (Slemmer) Lucey. He is the devoted father of Margaret Haughn and her late husband John of Plaistow, N.H., Francis X. Lucey Jr. and his wife Sydna of Westborough, William S. Lucey and his wife Guixian of Salem, N.H., Anne Lustwerk and her husband Stephen of Randolph, the late late Paul V. Lucey and his surviving wife Karen of Salem, N.H. He is the beloved step-father of Margaret and William Kenney of Hudson, Elizabeth and Tom Callahan of Reading and Ellen and Michael Randall of Lilburn, Georgia. He is the loving grandfather of 18 grandchildren, the late John P. Haughn Jr. and 2 great-grandchildren. He is the beloved brother of Grace and Ed Jones of Florida, Dorothy Dillon of Melrose, Bernadette and John Williams of Melrose, Margaret M. Lucey of Melrose, Sr. Marie Denis S.P. of Washington, D.C., Patricia Foley of Melrose and the late John T. Lucey. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.

Fran's Funeral will be held on Tuesday August 12, 2008 at 10:30 a.m. from The Carr Funeral Home, 1159 Main St. Melrose followed by his Funeral Mass in The Most Blessed Sacrament Church, 1155 Main St. Wakefield at 11:30 a.m. Relatives and friends are invited. Visiting hours for Fran will be held on Monday August 11, 2008 from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Burial will be at Wyoming Cemetery, Melrose.
