BEVERLY - Joseph G. Garvey, 88, of Beverly, formerly of Salem, died Monday evening, August 4, 2008 at the Essex Park Rehabilitation & Nursing Center, Beverly following a long illness. He was the husband of 62 years of the late Lorraine Hall (Smith) Garvey who died on May 31, 2008.
Born in Salem, he was the son of the late Stephen & Celina (Bouchard) Garvey. He was a graduate of Salem High School in the class of 1939 and was a member of the Ward 5 Social Club, Salem. He was a resident of Beverly since 1948.
An Army veteran of WWII, he served in the Asiatic Pacific Theater with the 1715th Aviation Signal Service Battalion and attained the rank of Sergeant.
Prior to his retirement, he was employed for many years at Turner Tanning Machinery Co. in Peabody, then at Aulson’s in Salem, which later became Spico in Beverly. He bladed cylinders for the leather industry in this country and abroad.. In his retirement years, he worked at Star Market and Shaw’s in Beverly.
Mr Garvey was an avid bowler and Red Sox fan.
He is survived by one son and daughter-in-law, David S, & Helen V. Garvey of Dover, one daughter, Brenda J. Garvey and her longtime companion, Dave Deforrest of Beverly, one grandson, Matthew J. Garvey of Dover, one sister, Patricia DiMarino of Hanover, a sister-in-law, Constance Good of Hyannis and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by one sister, Mary L. Garvey.
His funeral service will be held Saturday, August 9, 2008 at 11 am from the Full-Spychalski Funeral Home, 84 Washington Square East, by Salem Common, Salem, followed by a funeral Mass at 12 at the Immaculate Conception Church, Salem. Visiting hours are Friday, 4 to 8 pm. Relatives and friends respectfully invited. Burial is in Greenlawn Cemetery, Salem.
