GLOUCESTER: Alice M. (Lockhart) Broad, 78, died Monday, August 4, 2008 following an extended illness. She was the wife of the late Robert E. Broad, Jr. They had shared forty-three years of marriage.
Born in Medford on April 2, 1930, she was the daughter of the late Arthur and Alice M. (Hunson) Lockhart. She was a graduate of the Gloucester High School class of 1948, where she excelled in scholastics and athletics. Allie was a recipient of the prestigious Sawyer Medal Award and was a regional Spelling Bee winner. She was also captain of the G.H.S. Girls’ Basketball Team.
Following graduation, she worked at C.F. Tompkins until marrying her high school sweetheart. She was also employed periodically as a bookkeeper at Modern Heat and as a typesetter for the Gloucester Daily Times.
She devoted her life to raising her three lucky sons, and caring for her husband, who was stricken with multiple sclerosis at an early age.
An avid bowler, Allie participated in a morning bowling league for many years. She also loved to bake and everyone loved her chocolate chip cookies. Alice was greatly loved, and will be greatly missed.
She is survived by her sons, Robert E. Broad, III of Gloucester, Bruce Broad and his longtime companion, Jan Vigneault, and former Ward 5 City Councilor, Brian Broad and his wife Clara (Renz) Broad of Tampa, FL, three grandchildren, Brianna, Nathan and Andrea, as well as many nieces and nephews. She was also predeceased by her sister, Marilyn Sova, and her husband Dunk, and her brother-in-law, Dana Broad.
The family wishes to thank Cape Ann Senior Care, the Hospice of the North Shore and her primary caregiver, Sharon Ivey, for their kindness and compassion during this very difficult time.
Her funeral service will be held on Friday morning in the Pike-Grondin Funeral Home, 61 Middle Street, Gloucester at 11 a.m. There are no visiting hours. In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy may be made in her memory to the Spectrum Adult Day Health Program, 600 Cummings Center, Beverly, MA 01915, in the hope that other dementia patients and their families can experience the life-enriching benefits this facility has to offer. Interment will be held in the Beechbrook Cemetery.
