Obituary


Mr. John W. “Hypie” McDermott, of Taunton and formerly of Rehoboth, died
Sunday, August 3 at his residence following a four-month battle with cancer. He was
the dear companion of Marion Medeiros and was the former husband of the late
Delores (Morris) McDermott. He was born 73 years ago in Taunton, the son of the
late Patrick P. and Enid (Lumbert) McDermott. He was educated in Taunton, had
attended the former Boston Trade School, and was a graduate of Wentworth Institute
in Boston. Prior to his retirement, he had been employed as foreman of the Rehoboth
Highway Department for several years. He had previously been employed as an
engineer for the Foxboro Company for 25 years. A U.S. Navy veteran, he served for
many years and had attained the rank of Chief Communications Officer when dis-
charged from active service in 1961. Following active service, Mr. McDermott also
served in the U.S. Naval Reserve for a number of years. He was an active member of
the Taunton Lodge of Elks, where he served as Chairman of the Board of Trustees. He
was a well known and frequent visitor to the Falmouth Lodge of Elks over the many
summers that his late father spent on Cape Cod. He was also a member of the Italian
Naturalization Club in Taunton and the Rehoboth Mens Club in Rehoboth. Mr. McDer-
mott enjoyed playing cards and socializing with his many friends at both the Taunton
Lodge of Elks and the Italian Club. He attended the former Immaculate Conception
Church in Taunton.
In addition to his companion, Marion, of Norton, he leaves:
1 son: Raymond Silva, and his wife Sandra of Wilmington, N.C.
2 daughters: Monica Lortie, and her husband R. Bruce of Taunton
Sherry A. Sousa, and her husband Paul of Rehoboth
5 grandchildren: Amy McLaughlin of Dighton
Brynne and Zachary Lortie both of Taunton
Aaron and Alec Sousa both of Rehoboth
several nieces and nephews
A Funeral Service will be held at The Riendeau-Mulvey Funeral Home, 467 Bay Street,
Taunton on Thursday, August 7 at 11:00 A.M. Interment with military honors will fol-
low in St. Joseph Cemetery, Taunton. Relatives and friends are invited to attend. Visiting
Hours will be held on Wednesday, from 4:00 to 8:00 P.M. The Elks’ Lodge of Sorrow
will be conducted during the visitation at 7:00 P.M. Expressions of sympathy in his memory may be made to the Veterans Committee of the Taunton Lodge of Elks, 119
