Sophie E. (MacQuarrie) Milley, 97, of Hingham, passed away peacefully in her sleep on July 31st at her daughter's home in Titusville, FL. Born in Lexington, Cape Breton Island, Nova Scotia, Canada and orphaned at the age of 14, she and her siblings moved to Gloucester, MA to live with her aunts. Upon graduating from Gloucester High School in 1927, she went to Boston, where she was employed in the office of Sears & Roebuck until her marriage. She became a U.S. citizen in 1940 and a resident of Hingham in 1941. She belonged to the Old Scots Presbyterian Church in Boston and attended the First Baptist Church of Hingham and the Fort Square Presbyterian Church in Quincy. Sophie was also a 50 year member of the Amanda J. Bosworth Rebekah Lodge in Hingham.
After 20 years at the Hingham Mutual Fire Insurance Co., she retired as a bookkeeper, and she and her husband Chesley W. Milley became Snowbirds and winter residents of Dunedin, FL. She was an avid reader and volunteered at the Hingham Public Library during her summers in Hingham. Sophie was preceded in death by her husband Chesley; brothers Allen and Donald MacQuarrie; and sisters, Katherine MacQuarrie and Jessie Morley.
Sophie was the mother of Donald Milley and his wife Freda of Hingham and Evelyn Isbell of Titusville, FL. Grandmother of, Barbara (Gary) Gorczyca of Hingham, Dawn (Ricky) Jones, and Robert (Leigha) Isbell of Florida. Great grandmother of Alexander and Nicholas Gorczyca, Christopher Jones, and Kaley and Tyler Isbell. Also survived by many nieces and nephews.
A Memorial Service will be conducted on Thursday, Aug. 7th at 2 PM at the Downing Cottage Funeral Chapel, 21 Pond St., Hingham. Friends may visit at the chapel prior to the service from 1 - 2 PM.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Sophie's memory may be made to the Hingham Interfaith Food Pantry, 685 Main St., Hingham, MA 02043.
