Obituary

Lawton Eugene Cox, Jr. 79, of James Island, husband of 59 ½ years to Miriam Craven Cox died Friday, August 1, 2008 at his residence.

Funeral service will be held Sunday, August 3, 2008 at 3 o’clock at Fort Johnson Baptist Church, 1473 Camp Road, James Island. Burial will follow in Christ St. Paul’s Episcopal Church Cemetery, Hollywood. Friends may call at James A. Dyal Funeral Home, Summerville from 7 until 9 o’clock Saturday evening. Flowers will be accepted or memorials may be made to: Connie Maxwell Children’s Home, 1178 Greenwood, SC 29648.

Mr. Cox was born February 7, 1929 in Norfolk, Virginia, son of the late Lawton E. Cox, Sr. and Belva Baldwin Cox. He graduated from St. Paul’s High School. He was a veteran of the United States Army, Marine Corps and Navy serving in World War II. Retired as 1st Sgt. Army Reserves 942nd Transportation Co. He was a member of Fort Johnson Baptist Church serving as deacon. He was a master mason at Lodge #396 over 57 years and International Brotherhood of Electrical working 60 years. He was retired as General Line Foreman with SCE&G, Charleston area.

Son: Lawton E. “Gene” Cox, III (Susan) of Charleston
Daughter: Yvonne C. Mattson (Demal) of Charleston
Son: John Michael Cox (Gayle) of Charleston
Grandchildren: Demal I. Mattson, III, Caroline Mattson Mason, Michael Eugene Mattson, James Michael Brown, Margaret Frances Cox, Caroline Elizabeth Cox, Madison Allen Ratliff, Elizabeth Gayle Ratliff and Alan Paul Dunham, Jr.
Great grandchildren: Riley Brown, Brynna Elise Mason, Zachary Paul Mason and Matthew Allen Ratliff
He was predeceased by his brothers: Allen Cox, Lanier Cox and Raymond Cox.
