TAUNTON – Charles Mendes, 85, died on July 25th at his home on Sabbatia Lake after a period of failing health.
Born in Taunton, he was the son of the late Antone and Mary (Silva) Mendes.
Educated in Taunton schools, he later served in the U.S. Marine Corp during World War II and fought in three major battles, Guada Canal, Bougainville, and Okinawa.
A bartender for over 30 years, he worked at the former Golden Pheasant and the former Tony Parker’s and was the Sabbatia Lake fish warden.
An avid Red Sox fan, he enjoyed gambling and entertaining family and friends with magic tricks.
He leaves a son, Lloyd Mendes of Iraq; 2 daughters, Dawn Mendes of NH and Pearl Temple of Anchorage, AK; a brother, Antone Mendes Jr. and his wife Lorraine of Dighton; a sister, Hilda Goldenberg of Taunton; five grandchildren; 9 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
He was also the brother of the late Gabriella Mendes and brother-in-law of the late Karl Goldenberg.
His funeral will be held from the Silva Funeral Home, 80 Broadway on Thursday, July 31 at 8 a.m. followed by a funeral mass at St. Jude the Apostle Church at 9 a.m. Burial will be at the MA National VA Cemetery in Bourne. Relatives and friends are invited to attend. Calling Hours will be Wednesday, from 4 to 8 p.m.
