NEW BEDFORD — Charles R. Besse, age 82 years, of New Bedford, died Tuesday, July 22, 2008, at the New Bedford Jewish Convalescent Home. He was the husband of the late Phyllis (Gardiner) Besse.
A lifelong area resident, he was born in Dartmouth, son of the late Charles and Doris (Neagus) Besse, and was a graduate of Dartmouth High School.
A member of Trinity United Methodist Church, he served as Treasurer for many years and also as Chairman of the Board of Trustees. An avid Red Sox fan and reader, he was employed as bookkeeper and office manager for A & P Company in New Bedford and Mattapoisett for 41 years.
He is survived by his sons, David and his wife, Robin of Marion, Donald and his wife, Karen, James and his wife, Susan and William and his wife, Judy, all of New Bedford; eight grandsons, Jason, Matthew, Tristan, Craig, Ryan, Justin, Nathan and Kiernan; and great-granddaughters, Julia and Ariana. He was brother of the late Donald and Robert Besse.
His memorial service will take place on Wednesday the 30th of July at 10 A.M., in the Wilson Chapel, 479 County St., at the corner of Elm St., NB. Friends will be received within the hour prior to his service. Burial in Rural Cemetery.
Remembrances may be made in his name to the Easter Seals program or any other polio affiliated organization.
