Jane (Henthorn) Smith, 70, of New Bedford, died July 21, 2008 at home after a long illness.
She was the wife of the late William C. Smith.
Born in New Bedford, the daughter of the late Eric and Edith (Smalley) Henthorn, she lived in New Bedford all of her life.
Mrs. Smith was formerly employed as a registered nurse at St. Luke's Hospital for 35 years in Level 2 Nursery. She also was the owner and president of W.C. Smith and Son Excavating Contractors.
She was a graduate of New Bedford High School, Class of 1955, and St. Luke's Hospital School of Nursing, Class of 1958. She was a founding member of the Pine Hill Investment Club.
She loved cooking, gardening and dancing, and enjoyed her family and friends.
Survivors include three children, Eric W. Smith and his wife Marilyn, and Sandra L. Almeida , all of New Bedford, and Sally J. Tripp and her husband James of Freetown; three sisters, Eunice Smith of Cincinnati, OH, Lillian Johnson of Dartmouth, and Marilyn Bressett of Monetta, VA; seven grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Her Funeral Service will be held on Thursday at 10 AM at the Saunders-Dwyer Home for Funerals, 495 Park St., New Bedford. Burial will follow in Pine Grove Cemetery. Visiting hours Wednesday 4-8 PM. For directions and guestbook, please visit www.saundersdwyer.com.
