Obituary

Irene McDearmid Barr, 86, of Fitzgerald died Friday, July 18, 2008 at Dorminy Medical Center in Fitzgerald.

Funeral services will be held at 2 PM Sunday, July 20, 2008, at Paulk Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Ches Smith officiating. Interment will follow in Evergreen Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 until 9 Saturday evening at the funeral home.

Mrs. Barr was born January 15, 1922 in Fitzgerald, GA to the late Mault T and Willie Mae Kirkland McDearmid. A 1939 graduate of Fitzgerald High School and attended Oklahoma College for Women. She married O.T. “Bill” Barr in 1940. She served 25 years as Director of Ben Hill County Department of Family and Children’s Services where she worked for 30 years. During World War II, she worked for the Rationing Board. She was a director for the Martin Gottlieb Christmas Fund and Memorial Chairman for the American Cancer Society. Mrs. Barr was a member of First Baptist Church and Faithful Servants Sunday School Class. She was an avid duplicate bridge and tournament bridge player.

She is survived by sons and daughter-in-laws: William T. and Leah H. Barr of Atlanta and Dennis M. and Linda B. Barr of Savannah; Grandchildren: Dana B. (Daniel) Foley, Jacksonville, FL, Damon B. Barr, Atlanta, and Lauren N. Barr of Savannah; sister: Karlene Hope Jordan of Macon; niece: Margaret Brown of Macon; and nephew: John Jordan, Jr., of Cumming. She was preceded in death by a brother, Robert Lucius McDearmid.
