Obituary

Arnold Leonard “Arnie” Marder, a resident of Winthrop for over 30 years, peacefully entered into rest after a lengthy illness on July 16, 2008, surrounded by his loving family in his home. He was 75 years old.

Born in Boston, the son of the late Joseph & Elizabeth (Olitsky), Mr. Marder was raised & educated in Boston. He was a graduate of Boston English High School & went on to earn his B.A. & M.A. degrees from Boston University. During the Korean Conflict Mr. Marder served in the United States Navy and was a crew member onboard USS Shenandoah & USS Stribling. He was a dedicated Boston school teacher for over 40 years & a member of the faculty & also the faculty senate at the Boston Latin School, retiring in 1999. Mr. Marder was a member of the Massachusetts Teacher’s Association, the Boston Teacher’s Union, & Temple Tifereth Israel of Winthrop. He enjoyed history, politics, antiquarian books, & was an avid Boston sports team fan.

Mr. Marder's wife, Ruth recalls that, "Arnie was a born teacher whose profession was a significantly integral part of his life. He instilled in his students, as well as his own children, that learning is one of life’s greatest adventures – and he, himself, lived by this creed"

Mr. Marder was the beloved husband & best friend of Ruth (Rosenberg) Marder with whom he shared 31 years of marriage, & devoted father of Jennifer Kiely & her husband Edward of South Boston, Peter Marder of Winthrop, & the late Jonathan Marder who entered into rest in 2006. He is also survived by his siblings, Bernice Rudnick & her husband George of FL, Donald Marder & his wife Iris of FL, & Steven Marder & his wife Barbara of Newton; his mother-in-law, Anne Rosenberg of Winthrop; & several nieces & nephews.

Funeral services will be held on Monday, July 21, 2008 at 11:00 AM in Temple Tifereth Israel of Winthrop, 93 Veterans Rd. Winthrop, MA 02152. Burial will follow in the Tifereth Israel of Revere Cemetery, Everett. Memorial observance will be held at his late residence through Monday evening. Remembrances in his memory may be made to a charity of one's own choosing or to Temple Tifereth Israel at the above address.
