John J. Connor, 83, of Mattapoisett died March 14, 2003 at St. Luke's Hospital after a brief illness.
He was the husband of Thelma A. (Austin) Connor, and son of the late Richard and Margaret (Egan) Connor.
Mr. Connor was born in New Bedford and had lived in New Bedford before moving to Mattapoisett in 1971.
He was a communicant of St. Anthony's Church in Mattapoisett where he served as a lector and altar server.
Mr. Connor was formerly employed as a registered pharmacist at Browne Pharmacy in Marion and Finni Pharmacy in New Bedford. He had previously been employed as an insurance agent for Metropolitan Life Insurance Company.
He served in the U.S. Army during World War II, before being discharged with the rank of Captain, and later served in the Army Reserves for over 20 years retiring as a Lieutenant Colonel.
Mr. Connor was a member of Florence Eastman American Legion Post 280 in Mattapoisett, and was a volunteer at Market Ministries Soup Kitchen in New Bedford.
He enjoyed spending time with his family
Survivors include his wife of 61 years; 2 sons, Richard Connor of Wayne, NJ, and Francis Connor of Albuquerque, NM; 5 daughters, Barbara Best of Fairhaven, Patricia Desautels of Berkley, Kathleen Gerry of Swansea, Mary Ellen Connor of Assonet and Martha Connor of Marion; 14 grandchildren; 7 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
He was the brother of the late James Connor.
Funeral from the Saunders-Dwyer Mattapoisett Home for Funerals, 50 County Rd. (Rt. 6), Mattapoisett, Monday, March 17th at 10 AMFuneral Mass at St. Anthony's Church at 11 AM.Relatives and friends are invited to attend.
Visiting hours Sunday, March 16th from 2-6 PM.
Interment St. Anthony's Cemetery, Mattapoisett.
