Of Roslindale died at home of cancer on July 1st, he was 66. Mr. McCarthy was born and raised in Roslindale and spent most of his life there. He graduated from St. Thomas Aquinas High School and Boston College, and completed graduate studies in mathematics at UMass Amherst and Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh. Gene was a member of the mathematics department at Boston State College until 1982, at which time he joined the faculty at the Mass Martime Academy, where he taught until his retirement in 2005. He was revered as a distinguished and very popular educator who was very committed to his students. Gene was also committed to the youth of the community and was the manager of the Parkway Little League Pleasant Cafe Yankees for over 25 years. He also managed several Parkway Allstar Teams in statewide tournaments. Gene was a very loyal Boston College Alumnus and avid fan of the BC Hockey Team, Red Sox and all of his son Michael's numerous sport teams. Gene was predeceased by his wife Ellen M. (Delahunt) McCarthy. Devoted father of Michael T. McCarthy of Roslindale. Brother of Elaine McCarthy of Dedham and Ward McCarthy of Pennington, NJ. Gene will be lovingly remembered by his cousins, nieces, nephews and friends, as well as his former ball players and students. Funeral Mass in Holy Name Church, West Roxbury, Saturday, July 5th at 10 AM. Relatives and friends kindly invited. Visiting hours omitted. Interment St. Joseph Cemetery, West Roxbury.
