GLOUCESTER: Mary S. (Sweet) Peavey, 81, of McPherson Park, died Tuesday, July 1, 2008 in the Addison Gilbert Hospital, following a brief illness. She was the wife of the late Roy B. “Bud” Peavey, who died in December of 1995. They had shared 48 years of marriage.
Born in Gloucester on August 15, 1926, she was the daughter of the late Ralph and Jennie (Fraser) Sweet. She was a lifelong resident of Gloucester and attended Gloucester public schools.
She was a longtime member of the Gloucester Fraternity Club, where she and Bud initiated and were active volunteers of the monthly Friday night dinner and dances for special needs families on Cape Ann. She was also a member of the Holy Name Society of the Our Lady of Good Voyage Church.
For over thirty years, Mary loved going on vacation with her family to Old Orchard Beach in Maine. She loved playing cards with family and friends, especially her sister, Blanche. She also enjoyed taking bus trips with her daughter, Debbie, sisters and friends, and especially enjoyed day trips and shopping with her grandson, Timmy. She will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her.
She is survived by four daughters and sons-in-law, Deborah A. and Robert Conrad, Lois F. and Walter A. Day, Mary Jane and Robert Nelson, Nancy M. and Robert Fulford, three sons and two daughters-in-law, Roy B. Peavey, Jr., Robert J. and Amy (Pettinger) Peavey, and Don A. and Leslie (Watson) Peavey, ten grandchildren, James M. Silva, Christine A. Mondello and Toni-Lee Mondello, Nekole Howard, Amy David, Tammy M. Sainato, Jaimie Klopotoski, Brandon R. Peavey, Timothy M. Fulford and Olivia Peavey all of Gloucester, seven great-grandchildren, Justin R. and Jacob A. MacDonald, Mellissa A.Silva, Zachary M. Burke and Gavin D. Sainato, Wade and Jenna Howard, two sisters, Blanche Kilman and Jennie Sweet, a brother and sisters-in-law, Elias and Nina (Orlando) Sweet and her sister-in-law, Barbara, wife of Leo Amero. She was also predeceased by two sisters, Grace Sweet and Cora Chadwick, and six brothers, Ralph G., Jr., John M., William R., Elwood, Forrest “Bud” and Homer Sweet.
Her funeral service will be held on Thursday morning in the Trinity Congregational Church, 70 Middle Street, Gloucester at 10 a.m. Visiting hours will be held this evening in the Pike-Grondin Funeral Home, 61 Middle Street, Gloucester from 5 to 8 p.m. Relatives and friends are cordially invited to attend. In lieu of flowers expressions of sympathy may be made in her memory to the Hospice of the North Shore, 10 Elm St., Danvers, MA 01923. Interment will be held in the Calvary Cemetery.
