Sybil "Billie" Bergeron Cook of Tifton entered into eternal rest on Tuesday, July 1, 2008 after a lengthy illness. Funeral services will be held at the First Presbyterian Church of Tifton at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, July 4, 2008. Dr. Bill Christman will officiate with interment to follow in Oak Ridge Cemetery. Van Frazier, Kenneth Smith, Steve Jones, James Benson, Stewart Paramore and Fred Mistretta will serve as pallbearers. The family will receive friends at Bowen-Donaldson Home for Funerals between 6:00 and 8:00 p.m. on Thursday, July 3, 2008.
Mrs. Cook was born on April 16, 19220 in Washington, D.C. to Leon and Sybil Kilpatrick Bergeron, both deceased. She moved to Tifton at an early age and graduated from Mystic High School. She attended Georgia Women's College, where she earned her R.N., and she received her public health training at Peabody College. She was a Tift County Public Health nurse for 33 years.
After retirement, Mrs. Cook continued her service to others as a volunteer for several charitable organizations. She was also very active with her beloved First Presbyterian Church of Tifton, where she served as an elder.
In addition to her parents, Mrs. Cook was preceded in death by her husband of sixty years, Melvin Cook; a sister, Tinkie Middleton; and two brothers, Bob and Lonnie Bergeron.
Mrs. Cook is survived by her two children and their spouses, John and Laverne Cook of Irwinville, and Holle and Johnny Abee of Tifton; one sister, Marie Paramore of Winterville, North Carolina; and one brother, Jack Benson of Irwinville. Survivors also include three granddaughters and their husbands, Mandy and D.J. Schneider, Shannon and Jade Rutland, and Melissa and Cory Crow, all of the Tifton area. In addition, Mrs. Cook was "Grammy" to six great grandchildren, Jacob and Caleb Schneider, Lexi and Audrie Rutland, and Jonathan and Tristan Crow.
Donations to Brother Charlie's Rescue Center and the Tiftarea Animal Shelter, as well as flowers, are welcomed.
