Obituary

WORCESTER-Paul Edward Roughan, 73, of Worcester, died peacefully, Monday, June 30th in his home surrounded by his family due to complications of Alzheimer’s disease. He left a legacy of life and family through his wife of 52 years, Phyllis M. (Ayotte) Roughan; his seven children, Paul E. Roughan, Jr. and his wife Kathy of Wilton, CT, Mark T. Roughan and his wife Lorrie of Sandwich, Cathleen M. Roughan of Pepperell, Timothy R. Roughan and his wife Eileen of Brookfield, Elizabeth R. Parker and her husband Roger of Tyngsboro, Stephen G. Roughan and his wife Sandy of Mashpee, and Thomas B. Roughan and his wife Christina of New York City, NY; nineteen grandchildren; and two great grandchildren. He also leaves many nephews and nieces and their families. Paul was predeceased by his brothers, John and Thomas and his sisters, Kathy, Mary and Joanne.

He was born in Worcester, the son of Thomas Bernard and Catherine V. (Brennan) Roughan. Paul was a 1952 graduate of St. Peter’s High School, received his Bachelor of Science in Chemistry from the College of the Holy Cross in 1956, and received his Master of Science in 1960 and his PhD in Physical Chemistry in 1962 from Iowa State University. He worked in the semi-conductor industry for many years and had been employed by Sprague Electric in North Adams and Worcester and Unitrode Integrated Circuit Company in Merrimack, NH before retiring from AVX Corporation in Myrtle Beach, SC in 1996. Paul also spent many years setting up semi-conductor manufacturing plants in the Philippines and Singapore. He was an avid golfer and a master bridge player. Paul enjoyed completing the New York Times Sunday crossword (in pen!) and spending time with his children and grandchildren at Hampton Beach, the Cape and on visits to Ireland.

The funeral is Wednesday, July 2nd from O’CONNOR BROTHERS FUNERAL HOME, 592 Park Avenue with a Mass at Noon in Christ the King Church, 1052 Pleasant Street. Burial will be in St. John’s Cemetery. Calling hours are Tuesday, July 1st from 5:00 until 8:00 PM in the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association, 311 Arsenal Street, Watertown, MA 02472.
