Lawrence DeSouza, 87, of Little Compton, RI passed away Saturday, June 28, 2008 at St. Anne’s Hospital after a brief illness. He was husband of the late Clarice H. (Chadwick) DeSouza.
Born in Fairhaven, son of the late Frank and Mary (Bettencourt) DeSouza, he grew up in Fairhaven prior to moving to Little Compton in 1961. A United States Navy veteran of WWII, he was a member of the Submarine Veterans of WWII, American Legion Post #37 of Little Compton, Post #37 AMVETS and Post #37 of Bristol. Prior to retirement he was a civil engineer for the State of Rhode Island and then after retirement he was the owner / operator of Compton Associates of Little Compton. Mr. DeSouza was a Communicant of St. Catherine of Siena Church, Little Compton. He enjoyed traveling with his family and was an avid Red Sox fan. He coached Pony League of New Bedford for many years and started Little League Baseball in Little Compton.
Survivors include 2 daughters: Mary Lou Manchester and her husband Thomas of Little Compton and Norma J. Spaulding and her husband James of Grafton; a daughter-in-law: Sandra C. DeSouza of Lancaster, PA; 6 grandchildren; 7 great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
He was father of the late Russell DeSouza.
Funeral to which relatives and friends are invited will be Tuesday, July 1, 2008 from the Potter Funeral Home at 8:30 A.M. followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at St. Catherine of Siena Church, Little Compton at 10:00 A.M.
Calling hours Monday 5 - 8 P.M.
Interment will be private.
