William J. Belknap, 91, formerly of Indian Run Trail, died Thursday, June 19, 2008 at Heberts Nursing Home. He was the husband of the late Sophia B. (Pappas) Belknap.
Born in Providence, a son of the late Frederick and Rosella (McLaughline) Belknap, he lived in Greenville for most of his life. He is survived by his daughter, Eleanor (Billie) Clarkin and her husband, Matt of Port St. Lucie, Florida, five grandchildren and eleven great grandchidlren.
Mr. Belknap was drafted into the US Army in 1942, served in the infantry, mainly in the Pacific Theater. Following his active Army discharge, he worked for 30 years with the RI Army National Guard and the RI Air National Guard 102nd AC and Warning Squadron. After retirement from the military he worked as an inspector with the RI Registry of Motor Vehicles. He was a communicant of St. Philip’s Church since 1952, a past member of the Smithfield Lions Club and the Smithfield Lodge of Elks. He also served for a time on the Smithfield Zoning Board.
His funeral is Tuesday at 8:30am from the ANDERSON-WINFIELD Funeral Home, Route 44 at Greenville Common, Greenville, RI. Mass of Christian Burial at 9:30am in St. Philip Church, 622 Putnam Pike, Greenville, RI 02828. Burial with military honors in St. Ann’s Cemetery, Cranston. Visitation Monday 5-7pm.
