LOWELL—Robert A. McAuliffe, 88 years old, died Saturday evening at his home surrounded by his children. He was the beloved husband of the late Arlene M. (Corrigan) McAuliffe.
He was born in Cambridge, on January 3, 1920, a son of the late John and Ellen (Sullivan) McAuliffe. He was a graduate of Rindge Tech in Cambridge, and the College of the Holy Cross, in Worcester, Class of 1949.
Mr. McAuliffe served in the United States Army Air Corps as a Lieutenant during World War II, and was a POW in Germany for 13 months, until he was liberated by General George Patton.
He worked for many years for the Internal Revenue Service, in Boston, and retired as the Branch Chief of Audit. After his retirement, he worked for the Ward Commission and the State Ethics Commission. He also volunteered for the American Cancer Society for fifteen years as a driver for cancer patients.
He was a longtime member of Long Meadow Golf Club.
Mr. McAuliffe is survived by his eight children: Arlene McDermott and Jack Lightfoot, of Lowell; Thomas and Diane McAuliffe, of Dunstable; Carol McAuliffe; Joan McAuliffe; Phyllis McAuliffe; Leo McAuliffe; Paul McAuliffe; and Nancy McAuliffe, all of Lowell; ten grandchildren: Eddie and his wife Colleen McDermott, Jimmy, Courtney, Alexis, Daniel, Kaitlyn, Rebecca, Emily, Michael, and Grace McAuliffe; two great grandchildren: Eddie and Molly McDermott; a sister-in-law: Monica Corrigan, of Winchester; also many nieces and nephews, and many dear friends.
He was the father of the late Robert W. McAuliffe, and brother of the late Dan, Jack, Ned, and Joe McAuliffe, Molly Dignan and Helen Harney.
Friends may call from 4 to 8 PM on Tuesday, June 24th at the MAHONEY FUNERAL HOME, 187 Nesmith Street, (Rte. 38). His Funeral Mass to be offered on Wednesday at 12 PM at the IMMACULATE CONCEPTION CHURCH. Burial in St. Mary Cemetery, Tewksbury.
