GLOUCESTER: Elmer J. Hill, 80, of 10 Dale Avenue, died Wednesday, June 18, 2008 in the Beverly Hospital following an extended illness. He was the husband of Charlotte “Ann” (Bradley) Hill.
Born in Cambridge on September 17, 1927, he is the son of the late Elmer and Florence (Prady) Hill. He was raised in Gloucester and attended Gloucester public schools.
He served in the Navy during WWII and was honorably discharged in August of 1946.
Mr. Hill worked on many construction jobs around the City of Gloucester, including the construction of the A. Piatt Andrew Bridge and Riverdale Park. He later became the maintenance fireman at the Gloucester Post Office, for 28 years until his retirement in 1990.
At the same time, he was the caretaker for the Ann Brewer estate in Manchester, where they resided for 27 years.
In addition to his wife of 38 years, he is survived by his children, Susan Taves of NH, Alan J. Hill, Lisa, wife of Brien Riley all of Gloucester, and Thomas, husband of Diana Spittle of SC, five grandchildren, including Jessica and Billy Riley of Gloucester, Thomas Spittle, V, of SC, Gerald Taves and Kim, wife of James Jenkins and their children of NH. He is also survived by his brother and sister, Robert Hill and Nancy Young both of CA, sisters-in-law, Ethel, wife of Alfred Rivers of Gloucester, Doreen Santos of CA, Helen, wife of Joe Grillo of FL, an aunt, and many cousins, nieces, nephews, extended family members and his many friends at Central Grammar apartments. He was also predeceased by his son, Peter Roy.
His funeral service will be held on Monday morning in the Beechbrook Cemetery at 10 a.m. Relatives and friends are cordially invited to attend. There are no visiting hours.
