GLOUCESTER: Edward G. Spellman, 77, of 4 Concord Street died Wednesday, June 11, 2008 at the Addison Gilbert Hospital, following an extended illness. He was the husband of the late Agnes (Sullivan) Spellman.
Born in Boston on August 4, 1930, he was the son of the late John P. and L. Marguerite
(Saul) Spellman. He was a graduate of the Bentley School of Accounting. As a young man, he was a member of the U.S. Naval Reserve.
Edward owned and operated the Howard Johnson’s in Stoneham for over 20 years, and also the Howard Johnson’s in Woburn for several years. He was president of the Redstone Merchants Association for a number of years. Later on, Edward was employed for many years by the U.S. Postal Service at the South Street Postal Annex in Boston, having retired in 1995.
He was an avid Red Sox fan, enjoyed bowling, playing cards and cribbage. He loved to bake and garden. He also loved going to the beach, especially the beaches in the Carribean. Known by all for his generosity and his frugality, he never went anywhere or bought anything without a coupon. Edward will be lovingly missed for his sense of humor, which he kept even while he was so ill. He tremendously enjoyed being with his children and grandchildren.
Edward is survived by three daughters and a son-in-law, Kathleen Verga, Linda Noradki, Nancy and Ted Baker, nine grandchildren, Michael Verga, Kristin Verga, Alycia Verga, fiancée of James Fritz, Steven Verga, Jennifer Lannon, fiancée of Josh Walton, Katie Lannon, Lauren Baker, Courtney Baker, and Rachel Baker, a great-grandson, Tyler Costa and great-granddaughter, Caydence Verga. He is also survived by his siblings, Paul, husband of Pauline Spellman, David, husband of Dagmar Spellman, Joan Peckham, Rita, wife of Bill Frazier, and Jack Spellman.
Visiting hours will be held on Wednesday evening from 5 – 8 p.m. in the Pike-Grondin Funeral Home, 61 Middle Street, Gloucester. Relatives and friends are cordially invited to attend. Interment will be held privately.
