Thomas F. “Franny” Hannan of Portland Maine, formerly of Brockton and South Weymouth MA, died peacefully at the age of 88, surrounded by his loving family on Friday June 13th at Gosnell Hospice House in Scarborough ME . Born March 6, 1920 in Brockton, he was the son of the late Dennis and Mary (Barry) Hannan. Mr. Hannan was a graduate of the Brockton High School Class of 1938 and was also a 1948 graduate of Bryant & Stratton in Boston. An Army Veteran of WW II, he became a POW captured in 1944 at the Battle of the Bulge. He had been employed with Johns Manville for 35 years retiring in 1982 and was also employed by LL Bean for 12 years retiring in 1996. He was a member of the Woodfords Club and the Park Danforth Resident Council in Portland. Most important to him was his family. He loved dancing and music. He was an avid Red Sox fan. He enjoyed travel and family camping vacations. He brought joy to many with his keen sense of humor.
He is survived by his wife Hyacinth (Bell) Hannan, his children, Heidi Sproul and her husband Richard of Yarmouth, ME; Thomas D. Hannan and his wife Helen of Rockland, MA; Patricia Wall and her husband Douglas of Fredericksburg, VA and Susan Hannan of Falmouth, ME. He was predeceased by his daughter Mary Ellen in 1955. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Mieke, Scott, Michael, Elyse, and Nate, and his great grandchildren Alex, Analisa, and Courtney. He was awaiting the arrival of his fourth great grandchild Ashley. Tom was the brother of the late Marie Johnson, Ellen Lander and Thomas Mahoney.
Graveside services will be held on Wednesday June 18th at 10:00am at Melrose Cemetery, 88 North Pearl Street, Brockton. In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Thomas may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105, for online donations click here
The family wishes to express their appreciation to the physicians who cared for Tom as well as the compassionate staffs at Maine Medical Center R-5, Brentwood Rehabilitation Center, Casco Bay Dialysis Facility, and Gosnell Hospice House.
A celebration of Life will be held at the Park Danforth in Portland at a date to be determined.
