Obituary

Robert "Bob" Hall Burnside III, son of Robert H. and Edith Burnside, of Mystic, Ct. died Friday, June 13, 2008 after a brief stay at Lawrence and Memorial Hospital. He was 68 years old.

Born in Philadelphia on October 14, 1939, Bob enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1956. That same year he was the youngest crew member assigned to the USS Nautilus. Upon his return, he was featured in an article in National Geographic for his time spent on the submarine. His love for the ocean continued after his discharge from the Navy. After retiring from Millstone Nuclear Power Plant in 1995, he spent much of his time fishing and boating, passions he passed down to his children and grandchildren.

Sports were another passion of Bob's. He was a diehard New England Patriot's fan and UCONN Huskies Girls' basketball fan. He also supported local teams, especially the ones where his children and grandchildren participated. He rarely missed an opportunity to see his family play in any sport.

He is survived by his wife of 48 years, Joyce McGugan Burnside and their children: Lt. Colonel Robert Burnside IV of North Stonington, CT, his wife, Cathy and grandchildren, Quinn and Hope; JoAnn Wielen of Munger, MI, her husband, Bill and grandchildren, Jake, Steven, Ryan, and Caroline Zummo; Steven Burnside of Pawcatuck, CT, his wife, Kathleen, and grandchild, Emma; George Burnside of Pawcatuck, CT, his wife, Stacey, and grandchildren, Tyler, Riley, and Shay.

His family will greet relatives and friends at The Dinoto Funeral Home, 17 Pearl Street, Historic downtown Mystic on Tuesday from 10am-11:45am, immediately followed by a service at 12noon.

In lieu of flowers, contributions in Bob's memory can be made to Stonington Youth Football League at 439 Wheeler Rd, Stonington, CT 06378 or to the USS Nautilus Museum at Submarine Force Library and Museum Association, Box 501 Naval Submarine Base New London, Groton, CT 06349
