Joseph T.J. Smith, 88, of Westport passed away unexpectedly Wednesday, June 11, 2008 at home. He was husband of the late Doris F. (Marlow) Smith.
Born in New Bedford, son of the late Joseph and Victoria (Nowakowska) Smith, he was married in 1948 and had lived in Dartmouth prior to moving to Westport in 1966. An Army veteran of WWII, he served his country in the Pacific earning the Asiatic Pacific Theater Campaign Ribbon, the American Theater Campaign Ribbon and the Victory Medal. He was an industrial sprayer for Acushnet Rubber Company until retiring in 1982. Mr. Smith was a Communicant of St. George Church, Westport. An avid Red Sox and Patriots fan, he enjoyed photography, woodworking, gardening, wildlife and fishing. Held in the highest esteem by his family he raised his 3 children by himself after the death of his wife in 1969.
Survivors include 2 sons: Mark M. Smith of Westport and Chris J. Smith of Fall River; a daughter: Doreen M. Smith of Norton; 2 grandchildren: Andrew J. Smith and Jennifer R. Smith; several nieces and nephews; and his neighborhood squirrels.
He was the brother of the late Stanley Smith.
Funeral to which relatives and friends are invited will be Tuesday, June 17, 2008 from the Potter Funeral Home at 9:00 A.M. followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at St. George Church, Westport at 10:00 A.M.
Calling hours Monday 5 - 8 P.M.
Interment in St. Mary’s Cemetery, New Bedford.
