NEW BEDFORD — Mrs. Adra J. (Allen) Cook, of New Bedford, passed away at St. Luke's Hospital on Tuesday, June 3, 2008. The beloved wife of the late Seabury Cook of New Bedford, she was eighty-nine.
A lifelong resident of this city, Mrs. Cook lent her talents to local organizations such as WHALE, the Interchurch Council of Greater New Bedford, the New Bedford Preservation Society, and the local chapter of the American Red Cross. She was a past president of the Garden Club of Greater New Bedford.
Among Mrs. Cook's favorite past times were golfing at the Country Club of New Bedford and a love of music, especially opera. She was an accomplished pianist and saxophonist.
Mrs. Cook was a formidable bridge player competing in tournaments both locally and in Boston, achieving the well-deserved distinction of Life Master.
She is survived by her sons, Dr. LeBaron O. Ferguson of Morano Valley, Ca., and Mr. Kristian Stoltenberg of Rochester, Ma.; her daughters, Ms. Cornelia C. Johnson of Winchester, Ma., Ms. Mercy Cook Masters of Winchester, Ma., and Mrs. Rosalyn Reiss of Corvallis, Montana; eleven grandchildren; and eleven great-grandchildren.
Remembrances in her name may be made to the Old Dartmouth Historical Society (Whaling Museum), 18 Johnny Cake Hill, NB 02740. Visitation will take place on Friday from 4-8 P.M., in the Wilson Chapel, 479 County St., at the corner of Elm St., New Bedford. On Saturday, relatives and friends are asked to gather by 9:30 at the funeral home. We will all then process to Rural Cemetery for a 10 A.M., graveside service followed by a reception at the Wamsutta Club, 427 County St., at Union St., New Bedford.
