Obituary

SALEM - Lorraine “Lori” Hall (Smith) Garvey, 86, of Beverly, formerly of Salem, wife of Joseph G. Garvey, died Saturday morning, May 31, 2008 at the Lahey Clinic Medical Center in Burlington following a brief illness.

Born in Salem, she was the daughter of the late Frank E. and Blanche (Mitchell) Smith and was a graduate of Salem High School.

Lori was employed at the Lynn Sand & Stone Co., then for the Merchants Reporting Service before becoming a telephone operator for the New England Telephone & Telegraph Co., Salem, of which she was very fond. While with the phone company, she was a member of The Club Girls, a group of about a dozen very good friends. She was a Girl Scout leader, and enjoyed teaching signaling to the girls.

A resident of Salem until moving to Beverly in 1948, she was a member of the former Lafayette Street United Methodist Church and the Wesley United Methodist Church in Salem.

Besides her husband, with whom she shared 62 years of marriage, she is survived by one son and daughter-in-law, David S, & Helen V. Garvey of Dover, one daughter, Brenda J. Garvey and her longtime companion, Dave Deforrest of Beverly, one grandson, Matthew J. Garvey of Dover, one sister, Constance Good of Hyannis a sister-in-law, Patricia DiMarino of Hanover and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by a sister, Barbara S. McKeon.

Her funeral service will be held Thursday, June 5, 2008 at 11 am in the Full-Spychalski Funeral Home, 84 Washington Square East, by Salem Common, Salem. Visiting hours are Wednesday from 4 to 8 pm. Relatives and friends respectfully invited. Burial is in Greenlawn Cemetery, Salem.
