Dr. Norton M. Whitney a well known podiatrist in Needham for over 57 years and a resident of Dover for over 51 years died on Thursday, May 29th at Clark House in Westwood. He was 84 years old. Born on Brookline, he was the son of the late Dr. Carleton and Dorothy (Amsden) Whitney. Dr. Whitney was a graduate of Needham High School Class of 1940 and he received his medical degree from Temple University in 1950. In 1942 he enlisted in the Navy and served his country proudly and courageously during World War II. He landed on the beach at Iwo Jima on day one of the battle amid heavy mortar attack and immediately helped in the evacuation of wounded soldiers. On day four, he was asked to go to the frontline as they badly needed corpsmen to evacuate the wounded to the beach. He spent the next 11 days doing this and was ordered to return to the division hospital as he was needed to assist in the operating room. In a letter to his parents he wrote, “It’s been hard work and we have been quite busy, but I’ve been helping save lives of men who have given everything and so it is sort of satisfying in days like this”. Dr. Whitney received an Honorable Discharge from the Navy in January of 1945. He also served at Saipan,the Marshall Islands and Tinian. He was a member of the American Podiatrist Association. An avid sailor and yachtsman, Dr. Whitney was a member of the Boston Yacht Club in Marblehead for over 30 years. He enjoyed woodworking and was the builder of many birdhouses, arbors and cupolas. The beloved husband for 58 years of Alma M (Neuffer), he was the loving father of Marsha Whitney Parker of Needham and Ellen Martha Blackburn and her husband Glenn of Dover. The brother of Dr. Alan K. Whitney and his wife Loretta of Cherry Hill, NJ, he was the dear grandfather of Lindsey Whitney Blackburn of Dover and James Peter Van Wart of Needham. Funeral services at the Eaton Funeral Home 1351 Highland Ave Needham on Tuesday June 3rd at 11:00 AM Relatives and friends are kindly invited. Visiting hours will be held o n Tuesday from 10-11 AM prior to the service. Interment services with Military Honor will take place at the Highland Cemetery in Dover.
