DRACUT - Guy R. Smith Sr., 83, a longtime resident of Dracut, died peacefully at his home surrounded by his loving family on May 29, 2008. He was married to the late Genevieve C. (Rourke) Smith who died in 1980.
He was born in New York on September 11, 1924, a son of the late Ray and Selma (Weyland) Smith.
Guy was a veteran of World War II, earning a Purple Heart during the invasion on Normandy Beach.
He was a lifetime member of the VFW, Walker-Rogers Post 662.
Guy retired in 1986 from Interstate Container and was a member of the International Pulp Workers Union. Guy was an avid New England sports fan and enjoyed discussing politics and current events. His favorite pastime was spending time with his family, friends, and neighbors. He was affectionately called "Pop" by all who knew him and enjoyed his sense of humor.
He is survived by four children Gail Whitney and her husband Russ of Windham, NH, Fran Zannoni and her husband Dennis, with whom he made his home in Dracut, Ed Smith and his wife Deborah of Dracut, and Jeffrey Smith and his wife Claire of Maryland; three sisters Ellen Carpentier, Selma Lloyd, and MaryAnn Lloyd; two brothers Ray and Richard Smith; eight grandchildren; nine great grandchildren; one great-great grandchild; a sister-in-law Anna Pare; a brother-in-law Joseph Rourke; and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a son Guy R. Smith, Jr., who died at the age of 20 in 1968, and a sister Atta Bourgeois.
Friends may call at the DRACUT FUNERAL HOME, 2159 Lakeview Avenue, DRACUT on Sunday from 2 until 6 PM. His funeral will be held at the funeral home on Monday at 10 AM. Burial will follow in St. Patrick Cemetery in Lowell. In lieu of flowers, the family would prefer memorial contributions be made in Guy's name to VNA Hospice of Greater Lowell, PO Box 1965, Lowell, MA 01853-1965.
