Camillo "Mel" DiLiegro
...WWII Purple Heart Recipient; age 85
TEWKSBURY - Camillo "Mel" DiLiegro, age 85, who served in the Army under the leadership of General George Patten, died Wednesday, May 28, at the Blaire House of Tewksbury after a two year period of declining health. He was the husband of the late Rose M. (Cota) DiLiegro, who died in 1980.
He was born in Gaeta, Italy on October 5, 1922, a son of the late Salvatore and Theresa (Nardella) DiLiegro. His family emigrated to the U.S. and settled in Somerville. He was raised there and graduated from Somerville High School. He had lived in Burlington from 1952, until moving to Tewksbury in 2000.
He joined the Army during WWII, and served in the 610th Battalion, 3rd Army, during the liberation of Europe. He served in several major battles including the Battle of the Bulge. He was awarded the Purple Heart Medal for wounds received in combat. He was honored by the Veteran's Services for the Town of Wilmington last Saturday, May 24th, with the dedication of a flag pole in his name, at the Senior Housing on Deming Way in Wilmington
When he returned from the war, he worked for the Malden Branch of the U.S. Postal Service. Later he retired from MA/COM in Burlington where he had worked as a Brazer. He was a former member of the Burlington Knights of Columbus and the Burlington Veteran's of Foreign Wars.
He is survived by a daughter, Theresa Pacheco of Tewksbury; a granddaughter, Tanya Martel and her husband Michael of Tewksbury; two great grandsons, Christopher and Matthew; a sister, Maria Regakis of Somerville; and two nieces, Elayne Regakis and Maria Regakas both of Somerville.
He was also father-in-law of the late Robert H. Pacheco and grandfather of the late Danielle Pacheco.
His Funeral Mass was celebrated Saturday, May 31, in St. Anthony's Church, Woburn. Burial with Army Honors followed at Chestnut Hill Cemetery, Burlington. Memorials to the American Heart Assoc., 20 Speen St., Framingham, MA 01701 will be appreciated.
