GLOUCESTER: Ernest C. Spinney, U.S. Navy, Ret., 78, of Magnolia, died Tuesday, May 27, 2008 in the Seacoast Nursing and Retirement Center, Gloucester. He was the beloved husband of Irene M. (Mitchell) Spinney.
Born in Gloucester on February 11, 1930, he was the son of the late Prescott Y. and Isabel P. (McComiskey) Spinney.
He attended Gloucester public schools and served world-wide with the U.S. Navy before being honorably discharged in July of 1967. He also continued to serve in the U.S. Naval Reserve for ten more years. A U.S. Navy veteran of the Korean War, he enlisted out of high school.
He was a noted ship’s modeler whose models have been appreciated by many.
Ernest worked as a ship’s rigger at the Marine Railways and at Goodrich Tire Co. in Gloucester for several years. He had also worked at Landmark School in Beverly Farms and was a self-employed carpenter before his retirement.
In addition to his wife of forty-five years, he is survived by two sisters-in-law, Elizabeth F. Mitchell of Melrose and Mary Elvira Spinney of Gloucester, among the several nieces and nephews are, Kenneth and his wife, Linda Mitchell of Melrose and Cheryl and her husband Vincent Puccio of Wilmington, several great-nieces and nephews. Two cousins, CarolynAnn Budrow of Gloucester and MaryLou Abrahamson of Beverly. He was also predeceased by four brothers, Prescott, Roderick, William and George Spinney and a nephew, William Spinney, Jr.
Funeral services will be held on Friday in the Pike-Grondin Funeral Home, 61 Middle Street, Gloucester at 11 a.m. Visitation will be held prior to the service from 9 – 11 a.m. Relatives and friends are cordially invited to attend. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in his memory to the charity of one’s choice. Interment will be held in the Calvary Cemetery, Gloucester.
