THOMPSON - Sandra A. Makarewicz, 64, of 200 Fabyan Road, North Grosvenordale, died Wednesday, May 28, in Fairlawn Rehabilitation Hospital, Worcester, after an illness.
She leaves four children, Ann Marie Duval and her husband James M. of North Grosvenordale, CT, Laura M. Routhier and her husband David A. of Dudley, Gilbert J. Guay and his wife Kelly and Jeremy A. Guay and his wife Tracy L., all of Webster; a brother, William Makarewicz of San Francisco, CA; seven grandchildren, Jared, Dylan and Taylor Duval, Aaron Routhier, and Andrew, Gabriella and Anna Guay. She was awaiting the birth of her 5th grandson in September. She was preceded in death by her sister Judith Brodeur in 1984 and by her brother Robert Makarewicz in 2004.
She was born in Webster, a daughter of William J. and Anna B. (Zachara) Makarewicz and was a lifelong resident. She graduated from Bartlett High School in 1961 and from Quinsigamond School of Nursing in Worcester in 1968, earning a degree as a registered nurse.
She first worked in the intensive care unit at Hubbard Regional Hospital for 10 years and then as a medical surgical nurse at Day Kimball Hospital in Putnam, CT. She was a nursing supervisor at Worcester State Hospital since 1986, retiring recently due to illness.
She was a member of St. Joseph Church in North Grosvenordale, CT. She belonged to the Mass. Nursing Association. Sandra enjoyed playing bingo and computer games, stargazing and the outdoors. She had a fondness for animals, particularly her daughter’s late dog, Dusty.
The funeral will be held Saturday, May 31, from the Sitkowski & Malboeuf Funeral Home, 340 School St., with a Mass at 10:30 AM in Sacred Heart of Jesus Church, 16 East Main St. After cremation, burial will be at the convenience of the family. A calling period will be from 8:30 to l0:00 AM Saturday, May 31, in the funeral home. Donations in her name may be made to the Arthritis Foundation, Mass.
