Major George Francis Cunningham, 3rd USAR (Ret.) died on Monday, May 26, 2008, Memorial Day, at the Brockton V.A. Hospital after a lengthy battle with complications from Melanoma as a result of Operation Iraqc Freedom. He was fifty eight years of age. He was born in Quincy. Son of the late George F. Cunningham Jr. and Marie (Connors) Cunningham. Major Cunningham graduated from Rockland High School in 1967. He attended Bridgewater States College and Massasoit Community College, receiving his RN in psychology. Major Cunningham was a longtime member of the Mount Olivet Lodge of Masons AF and AM, Alleppo Shrine . He was a Scottish Rite Mason 32nd degree and numerous other organizations. Among his service related awards were: Republic of Vietnam Gallantry cross Unit Citation with Palm, Republic of Vietnam Campaign medal, two Army Achievement Medals, three National Defense Service medals, Vietnam service medal with bronze star, Army Commendation Medal and many, many more. His last tour of duty was with the 883 Rd Med Co. in Iraq/ Kuwait. Major Cunningham leaves his daughter, Sarah Katherine Cunningham of Avon, his son Christopher Cunningham of East Bridgewater, his ex-wife/ friend, Frances (Vaughn) Cunningham of Avon and his friends at the Veterans Home in New Bedford, Mass. He also leaves a close dear friend Rev. Charles Rose of East Taunton. He loved fishing, country music, and mostly being of service to his country. His Funeral service will be held on Friday at 11am at the Taunton Funeral Home 8 Crapo Street (off Tremont St) followed by burial at Bourne National Cemetery with full Military Honors. Visiting hours will be held on Thursday from 5-8pm. A Masonic Service will be held on Thursday evening by the Mount Olivet Lodge AF and AM.
