A. Dorothy Bishop of Noank died on May 25 at Avalon Health Care Center at StoneRidge, in the presence of her family.
Born in New London, Connecticut on August 2, 1911, she was the daughter of John and Williamina MacDonald. At the age of 3 she moved to Noank where she resided for the remainder of her life, the last eight years at the Mystic River Congregate on Elm St. Whenever she was asked where she resided, she would proudly state in Noank, Connecticut.
She attended Williams Memorial Institute (WMI) where she graduated in 1928. She loved poetry and often would recite poems for her grandchildren. She was a world traveler having visited over 22 countries in the world and over half the states in the USA.
She is survived by her sister, Beulah Vars of Vermont and Florida, and her children Leland B. Bishop II of Duxbury, Massachusetts and Bonnie Lee Gordon of Ft. Myers, Florida. She was predeceased by her husband, Leland. In addition she leaves 6 grandchildren, 15 great grandchildren and 6 great-great grandchildren.
She was involved in numerous Noank activities over the years; such as, the Noank women's bridge club, a member of the Noank Baptist Church, the Evening Circle, and a member of the group who formed the Corner Closet. She was a charter member of the Noank Historical Society, and a member of the Order of Eastern Star.
She was proud of her involvement in politics where she continually encouraged people to exercise their vote. She was also a fan of the Boston Red Sox, the New England Patriots, and was an avid fan of UConn women's basketball.
A memorial service will be held at Noank Baptist Church on June 14 at 1:00pm.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Noank Baptist Church Fellowship Fund and/or the Hospice of Southeastern Connecticut, Norwich CT.
