LOWELL- Helen H. (Hedrick) Whiting, 92, a lifelong resident of Lowell, died Tuesday May 20th at her home. She was the wife of the late Kenneth E. Whiting, who died in 1984.
She was born in Lowell on April 22, 1916, and was the daughter of the late Clifton F. and Mabel (Marsden) Hedrick. She attended Lowell schools and graduated from Tewksbury Hospital School of Practical Nursing
Mrs. Whiting was employed for 20 years as a Licensed Practical Nurse by Tewksbury State Hospital.
She was an active member of the Christ Church United in Dracut. She was also a member of many different organizations throughout her life including the Licensed Practical Nurses of MA, the MA Congress of Parents and Teachers, the Greater Lowell Council of PTA's, the MA PTA, the Girl Scouts USA, the Middlesex Women's Club, Friends of Runels, AARP, the Retired, State, County, and Municipal Employees Association, the Friends of the Merrimack Valley River House, the Red Hat Society, the Lowell Parks and Conservation Trust, the Disabled American Veterans of Lowell, and she was the Regent for 17 years of the Molly Varnum Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution. She was also an active member of the Lowell Historical Society and was the curator for 18 years of the Historic Spaulding House in Lowell.
She was an avid traveler and enjoyed spending time at her home and the companionship of her cat "Buffy."
She was very proud of her many grandchildren and great grandchildren.
She is survived by four children Richard C. Whiting and his wife Shirley of Pelham, NH, Philip A. Whiting of Newnan GA, Ronald W. Whiting and his wife Barbara of Hudson, NH, and Linda C. (Whiting)Wingate and her husband Norman of Lowell; 17 grandchildren, 31 great grandchildren; a sister-in-law Beverly L. Parker and her husband Robert of Dunedin, FL and Rochester, NH; and several nieces and nephews. She was also the mother of the late Paul K. Whiting, grandmother of the late Gary E. Whiting, and sister of the late Lillian H. Von-Sabo, George C. Hedrick, and Marsden C. Hedrick.
Friends may call at the DRACUT FUNERAL HOME, 2159 Lakeview Avenue, DRACUT, on Friday from 3 until 7 PM. Her funeral service will be held on Saturday at 10 AM at the Funeral Home. Burial in Westlawn Cemetery in Lowell. Those who wish may make donations in her name to the American Heart Association, 20 Speen St. Framingham, MA 01701.
