Catherine M. (Barry) Hartwich 85, of Natick formerly of Newton died on Friday February 28th at the Mary Ann Morse Nursing and rehabilitation Center in Natick. Born in Newton Catherine had been a resident of Newton for over 75 years. Catherine grew up in Newton Center graduating from Sacred Heart High School in 1936 Magna Cum Laude where she excelled in basketball . She was the starting forward for the Sacred Heart High School Basketball team. After High School she went to work for the New England Telephone Company in Newton until 1943. In 1948 Catherine married Carl H. Harwich a Fire Fighter for the City of Newton and later moved to Newton Upper Falls in 1952. Catherine was a former employee of the American Motors Company in Needham and for many years Catherine was an Administrative Assistant in the Mayor’s Office for the City of Newton during the time when Mayor Monte G. Basbas held the office. In 1973 Catherine’s husband Carl H. Harwich Died. Catherine remained in Newton Upper Falls until 1990. She is survived by her two children Judith A. Hartwich of Pasadena CA and Carl M. Hartwich of Natick. She is also survived by her granddaughter Tara Hartwich of Natick and was the brother of Dr. Kevin G. Barry of Davidsonville MD and the late John L., Luman L., Edward F. Barry and Dierdre M. (Barry) Smith. Catherine is also survived by many nieces and nephews. Funeral services at the Eaton Funeral Home 1351 Highland Ave. Needham on Wednesday March 5th at 11:00AM. Visiting hours on Tuesday from 4-7 PM. Interment Gethsemane Cemetery in West Roxbury.
