Joseph L. Slattery, 78, of Punta Gorda, FL died May 19, 2008 at Charlotte Regional Medical Center.
He was the husband of Sylvia C. (Carlos) Slattery.
Born in Hartford, CT, the son of the late Marshall and Marguerite (Murphy) Slattery, he lived in Hartford, CT and summered in Mattapoisett before retiring to Mattapoisett in 1990 and Punta Gorda, FL in 2007.
He was a graduate of Central Connecticut State University, 1953 and received his Masters in Education degree from University of Hartford in 1956.
Mr. Slattery was formerly employed as a teacher in the Hartford Public Schools from 1953-1956 and served as vice president of the Hartford Teachers League in 1955. In 1957, he joined Travelers Insurance Company in 1957 retiring in 1990 as Assistant Secretary in the Life, Health and Financial Services Department.
He served as vice president of St. Lawrence O'Toole's Holy Name Society in Hartford, CT, member and chairman of Sacred Heart Church's Parish Council in Wethersfield, CT as well as a CCD teacher and lector. He was the past president of the Wethersfield Senior Baseball League.
While in Mattapoisett, MA he volunteered and or was appointed to several committees such as the Master Plan Committee and the SouthCoast emPOWERment Compact.
Mr. Slattery served in the U.S. Navy from 1948-1955.
Survivors include his wife; 6 children, John Carlos Slattery, Jennifer Dupuis, Jane Curran, Audrey Freshman, Matthew Slattery and Kathryn White; 3 sisters Jane Griffin, Marian Wynne and Glenna Bernard and her husband Richard; a brother, John Slattery; a sister-in-law, Audrey Carlos Lorenzen; 11 grandchildren.
Funeral from the Saunders-Dwyer Mattapoisett Home for Funerals, 50 County Rd. (Rt. 6) Mattapoisett Friday, May 23rd at 10 AM. Funeral Mass at St. Anthony's Church at 11 AM. Burial will follow in St. Anthony's Cemetery. Visiting hours Thursday, May 22nd from 4-7 PM.
