Anthony Saggese, of Medford and Buzzard’s Bay, died Sunday at Brighten of Medford Nursing Home. He was 98.
Mr. Saggese was born in Italy the son of the late Joseph and Adelena (Costello) Saggese. He came to the United States as a young man and settled in East Boston, working hard to support his family. In 1933 he opened a barber shop near Fenway Park and operated it until the early 1980’s, when he retired. Throughout the years many of the Red Sox players and management came to Anthony for haircuts. Anthony enjoyed many years at his home on Buzzard’s Bay and was a long-time resident of South Medford.
He was the beloved husband of the late Sestina (Ciaudella) Saggese. He was a devoted father to Joseph Saggese and his wife Carolyn of Medford. He was a loving grandfather to Steven Saggese and his wife Amy of Connecticut. He was a loving great-grandfather to Nicholas and Michael. He was the brother of Armand Saggese of Saugus, the late Pasquale, Philip, Josephine, Lena and Alberta.
Family and friends may visit Wednesday from 4 - 8 at the Dello Russo Funeral Home, 306 Main St., Medford. Funeral Procession will gather at the funeral home Thursday at 9 AM followed by a funeral mass celebrated in St. Clement’s Church at 10 AM. Services will conclude with burial at Oak Grove Cemetery.
