HERBERT PEARCE
MYSTIC- Herbert N. Pearce, age 86, of 236 Pumpkin Hill Rd., Mystic, died Thursday at Lawrence & Memorial Hospital where he had been admitted on Wednesday.
Mr. Pearce was born at the family home on May 31, 1916 the son of William and Freida (Ficki) Pearce. He attended the Groton School system and later served in the US Army for 2 years. He later entered the US Marine Corps. where he served for over 20 years, retiring as a POW and Master Sergeant.
After his retirement from the Marine Corps., he was employed at Civil Service in the Shipping & Receiving Dept. of the Navy Sub Base in Groton until retiring in 1982.
He was a communicant of St. Mary, Mother of the Redeemer Church in Groton, and had served as a volunteer State Police officer and was a member of the BF Hoxie Engine Co. in Mystic. He enjoyed gardening, woodworking, and was known for his sense of humor and sparkling wit.
A devoted family man, he is survived by his wife, Anne Irene (Berkery) Pearce, his five children, Mary Ellen Warykas of Jewett City, Daniel Pearce of Charlestown, RI, Dennis Pearce of Danielson and Therese Roberts and Anne Jayne Roderick, both of Norwich, a sister, Eleanor Edginton of North Stonington, and 7 grandchildren.
A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Mary, Mother of the Redeemer Church, 69 Groton Long Point, Rd., Groton on Tuesday at 10am. Relatives and friends are invited to attend. There will be no procession from the funeral home.
Burial with military honors will follow in St. Patrick Cemetery, Old Mystic.
There are no visiting hours. Following the cemetery service, the family invites everyone to return with them to the church's parish hall for a reception.
The family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to the St. Patrick Cemetery Assn, PO Box 236, Mystic 06355, the Mystic River Ambulance, West Mystic, or the American Cancer Society.
