Bernice J. (Slaughter) Reid, 78, of Mansfield died on Tuesday May 13, 2008 in the arms of her son Bobby at the Sturdy Memorial Hospital in Attleboro. She was the beloved wife of the late James C. Reid, Sr. who passed away on October 25, 1993.
Born in Holyoke, MA on October 17, 1929 she was a daughter of the late Beatrice (Slaughter) Ackerman and the late Francois Campbell.
She grew up in Holyoke and was educated in both Holyoke and Boston public schools. She furthered her studies and was a graduate of Simmons College in Boston. She received her Masters Degree in education at Tufts University.
Mrs. Reid was a retired second grade school teacher. She had taught in the Sharon school system for 20 years prior to retiring and had formerly been a teacher in the Boston school system for several years.
Her late husband’s family settled in Mansfield in the 1940’s and in the 1970’s Mr. and Mrs. Reid built their dream house in Mansfield where she lived for over 30 years.
Active in town affairs, Bernice severed on several town committees over the years including the Cable T.V. Committee. An avid artist she enjoyed painting and sketching. Her other interests included gardening, shopping trips and being in the presence of her adoring family.
She is survived by her devoted children; Robert K. Reid and his wife Cheryl of Mansfield, Karen E. Roby of West Warwick, R.I., Ronald A. Reid and his wife Maria of Marlboro, Joseph A. Reid of Mansfield and the late James C. Reid, Jr., also survived by her sister in law Winifred Harraway of Milton, 12 grandchildren, 12 great grandchildren and several nieces, nephews and cousins. She was the mother in law of the late Kenneth C. Roby.
Funeral services, to which relatives and friends are cordially invited to attend, will be held on Monday May 19th at 11:00 A.M. at the Sherman & Jackson Funeral Home 55 North Main St. Mansfield. Burial will follow in the Spring Brook Cemetery, Mansfield.
Visiting hours will be held on Sunday May 18th from 6-8 P.M. at the Sherman & Jackson Funeral Home.
