Mr. Joseph A. Cappello, 96 of Medford died Sunday in Winchester Hospital following a lengthy illness. Husband of Victoria (Strazzere) Cappello and the late Concetta “Connie” (Vaccaro) Cappello.
Born in Boston, he was raised in the North End. Son of the late Gaspare and Anna (Lotta) Cappello, he is a graduate of Boston English High School. He continued his education at Wentworth Institute in Boston, Franklin Institute and Dunwoodie Institute in Minneapolis.
As a young man, he owned a gas station. Mr. Cappello worked as an Engineer. In earlier years he served the U. S. Government working as an engineer at the Pentagon during WWII. Later he worked as a Chemist for B.F. Goodrich. He had also worked in the parts department of Sozio Appliances and for Servomation as a repairman. He retired in 1976.
Mr. Cappello Had a love for theatre arts and particularly enjoyed watching the old musicals. He loved to dance and had practiced tap as a young man, a hobby he returned to after retirement. A member of the Malden Senior Citizens, he also played the harmonica and was the leader of the Golden Age Harmonica Band. He enjoyed playing golf, gardening and was an avid sports fan.
In addition to his wife he leaves a daughter, Elisa Vaudo-Brancato of Medford, 2 sons Joseph A. Cappello Jr. of Medford and Gaspare Cappello and his wife Jolene of Wilmington DE. Father of the late Anthony Cappello. Loving grandfather of Christina, Daniel and Michael Cappello, Anthony Vaudo and Michael Brancato. Brother of the late William “Cappy” Cappello. Funeral from the Dello Russo Funeral Home, 306 Main St., MEDFORD Thursday at 9 am. followed by a funeral mass celebrated in St. Clement Church, 71 Warner Street, Medford, at 10 am. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend. Visiting hours Wednesday 4-8 pm. Services will conclude with burial at Woodlawn Cemetery, Everett.
