GLOUCESTER: Charles A. Babine, 88, of The Heights at Cape Ann, died early Thursday, May 8, 2008 in the Addison Gilbert Hospital. He was the husband of Lina K. (Mackey) Babine.
Born in Gloucester on February 2, 1920, he was the son of the late Charles P. and Helen F. (Delaney) Babine. He had resided in Gloucester most of his life.
A U.S. Navy veteran of World War II, he served on the USS Albany and USS Little Rock. Following the war he reenlisted in the U.S. Navy, where he served as a Chief Petty Officer for over twenty years before being honorably discharged in 1967. He then went to work as a chef at the former Capt. Courageous Restaurant and the Gloucester House Restaurant in Gloucester for many years.
In addition to his wife of sixty-three years, he is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Donald and Dorothy Babine, two daughters, Diane Roberts and Donna Pike all of Gloucester, seven grandchildren, Donald, Jr. and his wife, Dodie Babine, Danette and her husband, Kevin Bruni, Danean Cooper, Dean Babine, Kenneth Sonia, Kathy Sonia and Joseph Clancy all of Gloucester and Kevin and his wife, Dodie Clancy of Haverhill, fourteen great-grandchildren, Kayla Pinkham, Joseph and Briana Bruni, Michele and Nicole Robertson, Matthew Babine, Tiffany and Elisha Sonia, Elisia, Selina, Adam, Alex and Molly Clancy and Toni Cooper, two great-great-grandsons, Cody and Calen, two sisters, Dorothy Currier of Rockport and Mary Babine of San Francisco, CA, a brother and sister-in-law, John and Flumoki Babine of Puyallup, WA and several nieces and nephews. He was also predeceased by a sister, Rita Perry.
His funeral services will be held on Monday in the Pike-Grondin Funeral Home, 61 Middle Street, Gloucester at 11 a.m. Relatives and friends are cordially invited to attend. There are no visiting hours. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in his memory to the Cape Ann Animal Aid, 260 Main St., Gloucester, MA 01930. Interment will be held in the Beechbrook Cemetery, W. Gloucester.
